K9 dog Leo makes final visit to Hambright

Hambright Elementary School students had front-row seats Friday as Leo, a Lancaster City Police Department K9 dog, visited the school’s kindergarten classes.

Leo’s handler, Officer Ryan Hockley, told the students about how he and Leo interact on the beat in Lancaster city. The highly trained German shepherd uses his acute sense of smell to sniff out drugs and can attack “bad guys,” Hockley told the curious youngsters.

Leo has been visiting Hambright for several years, but Friday’s visit was his last, because Leo will soon be retiring from K9 service.

The dog will remain with his human partner, however, as Leo lives with Officer Hockley and his wife, Hambright kindergarten teacher Jocelyn Hockley.

Thanks for all the memories, Leo and Officer Hockley!
