Penn Manor students participate in ‘Senator for a Day’ program

Seven Penn Manor High School students recently had an in-depth opportunity to learn how state government functions during the “Senator for a Day” program, held April 4 at the state Capitol.

The students traveled to Harrisburg with their teachers, Jeremy Kirchner and Matt Rayha, to learn about the legislative process and serve on committees to discuss proposed legislation.

They participated with students from seven other area high schools.

Legislative topics included disciplining students for bullying that occurs off school property, seat belt use on school buses, drug testing for welfare benefits and Clean Streams Act regulations.

Students served on four different committees that debated legislation on these and other measures before reconvening as a group for a mock legislative session to discuss and vote on the bills.

Participating Penn Manor students included Viviana Arnold, Ethan Addy, Grant Roost, Gillian Moss, Emily Mummert, Akriti Neupane and Molly Bushong.

Many thanks to state Sen. Scott Martin and his staff for hosting our students and providing them with such a valuable experience.
