At the high school, there are a number of collaborative learning efforts that take place throughout the year. Recently, the Food Science and Nutrition class teamed up with the Women’s Health and Fitness class to participate in a lesson called “Smoothies and Self-Defense.”
This collaboration session blended nutrition education with physical empowerment, giving students practical tools to support both their bodies and their confidence.
The lesson began in the kitchen, where students worked in small groups to create nutrient-packed smoothies. They explored how ingredients like frozen fruits, leafy greens, yogurt, and protein sources can fuel the body, improve energy levels, and support overall wellness.
Students learned how to balance flavors while keeping health in mind, saying no to added sugars. The groups created make-and-take kale planters to add this powerhouse vegetable to summer smoothies.
The Women’s Health and Fitness students led a self-defense workshop that introduced basic techniques for personal safety, awareness, and confidence-building.
Participants practiced stance, balance, and simple defensive moves in a supportive and encouraging environment. The combination of physical activity and skill-building reinforced the importance of staying active and aware.
This collaboration highlighted how wellness is multi-dimensional. It showed the students that what we put in our bodies and how we move them matters. By pairing nutrition with self-defense, students gained a deeper understanding of how to take care of themselves inside and out.
