Martic celebrates Global Play Day

Students in Mrs. Mulder’s kindergarten class at Martic Elementary School participated in Global Play Day on Wednesday, February 4.

Global Play Day is a day where participants are encouraged to allow students ample time for free play without the use of screens, structured play, or adult direction. The goal is to let children explore their creativity, problem-solving skills, and social interactions in a spontaneous environment.

Mrs. Mulder said, “In a half-day kindergarten program, our schedule is incredibly demanding. Between mastering Fundations, navigating Eureka Math, and diving into our new STEELS science units, our students are working hard from the moment they walk through the door. Because we are so focused on meeting high academic standards, having a day fully dedicated to unstructured play was incredibly refreshing.”

Students began the day watching a short video explaining what Global Play Day entails. Mulder set up stations around the room and explained what was available at each of the stations. Within minutes of explaining what was being offered at the stations, excitement filled the air.

While some opted into the role of being the ‘teacher’ for the day, others ran their own hair salon, pizza shop, or supermarket. Students expressed their imagination through various arts and crafts, Lego building, or designing structures like architects.

“The students kept saying they couldn’t believe they ‘didn’t have to do any work!’ What they didn’t realize was the ‘unwritten work’ they were actually accomplishing: navigating social cues, problem-solving without a screen, and exploring their creativity while using their imagination,” noted Mulder. “Seeing them interact in such positive, organic ways reminded us all that while worksheets have their place, play is where the heart of learning begins.”

Dr. Jen Sugra, principal at Martic noted, “The value of play is often underestimated. When children play, it encourages autonomy of making independent decisions without an adult guide and promotes conflict resolution with peers who have different views of the rules. More than ever, children need these skills. Happy Global Play Day. Thank you to all of our early child educators who participated in a day of play.”

Way to go, Martic students. We hope you enjoyed Global Play Day!
