Penn Manor High School students are completing service projects to clean up public parks and schools, and members of the Civitas Club recently did their part to beautify a popular city park.
On May 1, 61 club members participated in a day of service at Long’s Park, planting flowers, weeding, removing trash and debris, and spreading mulch. This annual event began 27 years ago in conjunction with Earth Day and still continues through a partnership with Lancaster Civitas.
The students planted more than 600 flowers and applied 35 yards of playground mulch and 40 yards of dark mulch to planting beds and around trees, said park maintenance supervisor Deb Martin Berkoski.
They also picked up five cubic yards of winter debris from 80 acres of the park and filled two dump truck loads with downed limbs and logs.
“This day is so very important to us as we kick off the 2025 Summer season,” Berkoski said. “You can be very proud of your students. Thank you from the staff at Long’s Park.”
We commend these students and their advisors, Jen Kroesen and Sarah Stover, for this effort.
