Vietnam veterans share experiences with high school students

Many thanks to the military veterans who spent March 18 at Penn Manor High School to talk to students about their experiences in the Vietnam War.

Members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1008 met with students in the school’s Military Club, along with a social studies class, to share their experiences and show students memorabilia from their Vietnam service.

They also read the names of fallen servicemen from Penn Manor that served in Vietnam.

The guests included U.S. Army veterans Mike Mazzaro, Dan Duane, John Dobish, Ken Good and Dennis Myers (a Penn Manor alumnus) and U.S. Navy veteran Mike Kunitsky.

The veterans talked about how they ended up in the military, either through the draft or by enlisting, and what they encountered in Vietnam.

They also discussed the devastating impact of Agent Orange on service members and their families, what it was like to return home in the face of opposition to the war, and their often difficult transitions to civilian life.

Following the presentation, the veterans answered students’ questions and shared lunch with them in the Large Group Instruction room at the high school.

The cafeteria staff made sure that they felt welcomed home with red, white and blue decorations and even a patriotic dessert. They also set a table for the fallen soldier.

We want to thank these veterans for taking the time to share their knowledge with our students, and we thank them for their service!
