Marticville students and teacher earn Patriot’s Pen awards

Three students at Marticville Middle School have won awards in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest, and their teacher has been honored as the Teacher of the Year for her role in working with the students.

Elias Lance won first prize and a $200 award, Will Ryan placed second ($150), and Sophie Koser was third ($100) in the contest, which challenged students to write a 300- to 400-word essay on the theme “My Voice in America’s Democracy.”

The contest, sponsored by the Millersville Veterans of Foreign Wars post, was open to all students in grades 6 through 8.

“Student participation was optional, but I worked one-on-one with students who chose to write an essay to help them organize their ideas and edit their essays,” said Rachel Oler, a Marticville reading teacher.

For her efforts, the VFW named Oler Middle School Teacher of the Year. She was honored along with the students during a ceremony on Veterans Day, November 11.

Congratulations to Ms. Oler and her students on these awards!
