Penn Manor school board Tuesday formally honored the Comets field hockey team with a commendation for “its outstanding performance and for the team’s distinction as PIAA State Champions.”
Penn Manor won the Pennsylvania AAA Championship Nov. 15 after playing to a hard-fought 1-1 tie with Palmyra. After two exhausting, scoreless overtime periods, Penn Manor and Palmyra were declared co-champions — the first time two teams have shared the title since 1994.
The championship capped an outstanding year for the Comets team, which compiled a 24-4-1 record.
The board resolution recognized the players for their “exemplary sportsmanship and exceptional dedication to the sport and to the team.” Team members have “set a laudable example for young athletes throughout Pennsylvania,” the resolution says.
Each member of the team and coach received a copy of the resolution. The players presented the board with a plaque acknowledging the state championship to be displayed in the board meeting room.
School board president Ken Long pointed out that the players are champions in the classroom, too, earning an average GPA of 3.89.
Congratulations to a great group of student athletes!
