Beginning this school year, public schools will be putting in place the new United States Department of Agriculture guidelines for healthier meals for our students.
Here is an overview of the major changes required by the federal guidelines:
*Students must choose at least one fruit or vegetable serving when they purchase lunch.
*Students will have a greater selection and variety of fruits and vegetables to choose from.
*There will be weekly offerings of healthy dark green and red/orange vegetables, as well as beans and other legumes.
*Whole grains will be served. Beginning this school year, at least 50% of all grain foods served must be whole-grain rich.
*Only fat-free flavored milk (chocolate and strawberry) and 1% unflavored milk will be served.
*Sodium will be limited to a maximum of 740 mg sodium per meal on average.
The new menus will no doubt take some getting used to for students. The end result will be healthier meals for students, and well-nourished students perform better in school.
