PMHS Students Honored by PA Newspaper Association

Penn Manor High School was well represented at the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association’s annual Keystone Awards held in Hershey on Wednesday, March 14, 2012.

First place feature writing award went to Bryan Hess, Class of 2011, and Sarah Schaeffer, currently a senior at Penn Manor, for “Life has a Different Meaning for Juveniles Tried as Adults.” First Place Sportswriting award went to Alex Geli, Class of 2011, Jake Shiner and Sam Valentin, both currently seniors at Penn Manor, for “The Boys of Summer: Still Playing after Many Years.”

Both stories had been gold award winners in the Pennsylvania School Press Association contest during the 2011 school year and Bryan Hess and Sarah Schaeffer’s story was the top school newspaper story for 2010-11 in the National Scholastic Press Association competition and winner of the $1,000 Brasler Award.

Hess attends Eastern University for nursing, and Geli attends Penn State York for journalism. Shiner and Schaeffer (co-editors in chief) will both be attending the University of Pittsburgh for communications in the fall. Valentin plans to attend the University of Maryland for sports journalism.
