First Lady
James Buchanan invited Harriet Lane to be the First Lady at the White House after he was elected president. This was normally done by the president's wife, but since he was a bachelor, he asked his niece to assume that position. She was very excited because she loved to entertain people. When Harriet was there she helped James out a lot. She was in her late 20s when she became his First Lady.
Harriet was interested in many things and helped many people. One of the groups were the Indians. She was named "Great Mother of Indians"! She made pots, pans, and bowls out of clay she found in the wilderness. She traded skins and cloth with the Chippawas . She helped them during and after her uncle's presidency. Her interest and respect for their culture made them feel important.

Harriet Lane - Post Presidency
Many times in his political life, James Buchanan had to travel overseas. Harriet went with him sometimes. One of the trips was to England. James and Harriet were charming and kind and they became friends with the Prince and Queen of England. Their son, the Prince of Wales visited the White House and gave James and Harriet a lithograph of his parents, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. They currently can be seen at Wheatland. The Queen of England and Harriet really liked each other and she gave Harriet some tips on being a good hostess and a gracious first lady.
