PMHS seniors receive athletic awards, scholarships

More than 60 Penn Manor High School student athletes were honored May 16 during the Senior Sports Awards Social in the high school cafeteria.

The top athletic awards went to:

  • Brittany Braun and Grant Gale — All-Around Male and Female Athletes
  • Jeff Taylor, Jonah Barley and Brooke DeBerdine — Outstanding Penn Manor Male and Female Athletes
  • Malachi Lyon and Brittany Braun — A. LandisBrackbill Scholar/Athlete Award recipients
  • AmandaDiCamillo and Jared Byrne — Senior Athlete Leadership Award winners

Brittany Braun earned Academic All-State honors in volleyball and was an L-L League All Star in her junior and senior years.  In track and field, she holds the school record in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and earned L-L League medals in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and triple jump. She also is a district medalist in the 100 Hurdles and district qualifier in the 300 hurdles and triple jump.

Grant Gale was a four-year varsity football and baseball player. In baseball, he was a first team Section One All Star and served as team co-captain. In football, Grant was selected as a Lancaster-Lebanon League first team All Star as a receiver and recently competed in the Tri-County All Star Game.

Jeff Taylor has amassed an impressive career pitching record of 20-3 and is co-captain of the baseball team. He has been a three-year first team Section One All Star and was a first team All League player last year.  Jeff plans to attend Penn State University in the fall on a baseball scholarship.

Jonah Barley has compiled the most wins (149) of any wrestler in Penn Manor history. He is a three-time league champ, four-time district top six finisher and a two-time state top six finisher. Jonah also is a four-time first team Section I All Star.

Brooke DeBerdine, a four-year starter and a captain of the field hockey team, has been a regular on the Lancaster-Lebanon All League team, the Pennsylvania All State team and the National High School All American team. Brooke also is a member of the USA Field Hockey U21 National Team.

Malachi Lyon was co-captain of the cross-country and track and field teams, and has earned eight varsity letters. He was named an L-L League Cross Country second team All-Star. A member of the National Honor Society, he has a GPA of 4.42.

Amanda DiCamillo earned praise from her coaches for her versatility as a swimmer and lacrosse player. Lacrosse coach Jenn Forney called Amanda “one of the most coachable kids I have been around” and said she was willing to play “wherever she could to help her team be successful.”

Jared Byrne competed in the state swimming championships as both a junior and senior in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events. He was a four-year district qualifier and will be swimming at Wilkes University next year.

Also honored May 16 was Comets junior high wrestling coach Wes Mendez, named Penn Manor Coach of the Year. Mendez led his team to the Lancaster-Lebanon League Junior High Championship.  He has been a role model and mentor for the many junior high boys who have participated in our wrestling program the past 11 years.
