School Performance Profiles released

Penn Manor schools had mixed results on School Performance Profile academic measures released this week by the state Department of Education.

The district’s secondary schools posted gains from last year, while elementary school scores declined. Of note, Manor Middle School received the highest SPP score (89.6) of all middle schools in Lancaster County.

SPP scores are based on students’ standardized math, science, reading and literature test scores, academic growth from the previous year, attendance and graduation rates and other measures. Schools can receive up to 107 total points. A score of 70 or above indicates a school is making adequate progress, according to the state.

Here are the SPP scores for Penn Manor schools, with last year’s numbers in parenthesis:

  • Central Manor ES – 75.9 (81)
  • Conestoga ES – 79.8 (89.1)
  • Eshleman ES – 77.3 (84.2)
  • Hambright ES – 70.8 (78)
  • Letort ES – 85.9 (86.3)
  • Martic ES – 86.2 (88.2)
  • Pequea ES – 80.9 (86.9)
  • Manor MS – 89.6 (87)
  • Marticville MS – 87.2 (86.1)
  • Penn Manor HS – 92.5 (91.8)

Overall average scores for Penn Manor declined from 85.9 points last year to 82.6 points this year.

The declines resulted, in part, from a change in how the SPPs were determined this year, said Superintendent Dr. Mike Leichliter. For the first time, schools were rated on how well they closed the achievement gap for “subgroups” of students – including English language learners, special-education students and the economically disadvantaged.

Dr. Leichliter said, “Overall, we recognize that Penn Manor teachers and their students are under increased demands due to the greater accountability inherent in this system and are working incredibly hard.  We continue to be pleased with the scores released by the Department of Education while recommitting ourselves to continual academic improvement.”

Penn Manor is evaluating the results and will re-examine its existing comprehensive plan in order to improve academic achievement for all students, the superintendent said.
