James Buchanan had servants. He never had slaves because he felt slavery was wrong. He paid all of his servants. The servant's rooms were on the third floor. This servant's bell is hung at the top of the servant's rooms. The family member would pull a woven cloth rope that hung in each of the main rooms and it would ring on the third floor for the servant to come. This was easier than yelling for the servant to come down the steps. |
