A
School Counselor is someone who is there to listen. A
counselor tells the truth and keeps it quiet. When you are
so worried that you cannot really talk about it, or when you
are so scared that you don't know what to do, the counselor
can help you. You can even visit the counselor when you have
some great
news
to share ! School
Counselors at Penn Manor School District work with
all students in order to provide academic, emotional,
and social support. Each year, I will be providing many
different services including teaching in the classrooms,
leading counseling support groups, and seeing students on an
individual basis.

I will also be offering counseling support groups to all students on a referral basis. Parents, teachers, and students may make referrals at any time throughout the year. Support Groups may include students that are learning to deal with friendship issues, a changing family situation, a recent death/loss of a friend or family member, stress management, etc. Counseling groups typically last for 6 sessions.
For students whose needs cannot be met within the regular classroom environment or within a support group, I also offer individual counseling on a regular basis. Typically, I see students for one or two times a cycle to address ongoing concerns. Individual counseling typically lasts for 6 sessions.
CSS (Collaborative Support Services) is a team-centered approach used at Martic Elementary School to help students with academic and behavioral challenges. With the collaboration of several key staff members (such as the principal, the instructional support teacher, the reading specialist, the school psychologist, the school counselor, classroom teachers, etc.), the CSS Team meets with parents to discuss concerns and implement timely plans on a student-to-student basis.

The Peer Helper Program was initiated in the 2001/2002 School Year, and it was a huge success!
Sixth grade students are given the opportunity to apply (using a formal application and letters of reference) to be Peer Helpers in the beginning of each school year. After the Peer Helpers are trained by Mrs. Juba, they are each paired with a younger student, or "buddy."
The Peer Helpers and their buddies usually meet twice a cycle from 3:00-3:20 to complete late or missed work, practice reading or math skills, etc.
For more information on the Peer Helper Program, please contact Mrs. Juba !
Several School Counselors in the Penn Manor School District are trained as Active Parenting Educators. Each fall, a 12-hour parenting class is held for parents of elementary-aged children. These classes are held at either Marticville Middle School or Manor Middle School from 6:00-8:00 p.m. for six consecutive sessions.
During these sessions, parents learn positive ways to create a nurturing family atmosphere. By using literature, group discussions, video clips, and activities, we help each other learn more about the important job of being a parent!
The Martic Parent Resource Center is located within Mrs. Juba's office. Books and videos can be borrowed using the "honor system." Please make sure you complete the library card located on the back cover of the book and place the card in the yellow "out" file which is located on the book rack. When you return the book, simply find your card, place it in the book, and refile the book into the correct tub!
Here are some samples of materials that are in the Parent Resource Library!
