Ann LeTort Elementary School Handbook
The elementary handbook has been designed to communicate policies and procedures to you and your child. If you have any questions please contact the school at #872-9530. We look forward to a healthy, productive school year and the development of a strong home-school partnership.
The elementary day begins at 9:00 am and ends at 3:30 pm. Morning kindergarten
arrive at 9:00 am and is dismissed at 11:35 am. Afternoon kindergarten arrives
at 12:55 pm and is dismissed at 3:30 pm. When inclement weather or other emergencies
interfere with our start or dismissal time the following will happen:
If we are on a one hour delay, all students will be picked up one hour later
than their scheduled bus pick-up time. Morning kindergarten students will then
go home at their regular dismissal time. Afternoon kindergarten will operate
on a normal schedule.
If we are on a two hour delay, (modified kindergarten) students will be picked
up two hours later than their normal bus pick-up time. Morning kindergarten
students will then stay until 12:45 pm and be bussed home at that time. Afternoon
kindergarten students will be picked up 50 minutes later than their regularly
scheduled time and then be dismissed at 3:30 pm as usual.
Delays and early dismissals are announced on the following radio stations: WDAC-FM,
WIOV, WLAN, WSBA, WQXA, WJTL, and WRKZ. They will also be announced on the following
television stations: WGAL, and WLYH.
To ensure building security, all parents, visitors, and former students are
required to report to the office to obtain a visitor’s pass. To avoid
interruptions to the classroom, parents are asked to leave all messages and
materials at the office. The office will notify the teacher or student as soon
as possible. If you are picking your child up at the end of the day you must
use the pick-up area located in the rear of the school.
PARENT VISITATION
Parents are welcome to visit at any time. We ask that prior notification be
made to the appropriate teacher. Parents are also requested to notify the teacher
in advance when they wish to confer on matters concerning their child. Arrival
and departure times are particularly busy for teachers and we would appreciate
you scheduling appointments that do not interfere with these times.
Excuse forms or a written note from a parent should be returned to the classroom teacher following an absence. If your child arrives after 11:00 a.m. it will be considered a 1/2 day absence. If they depart before 1:00 p.m. it will be considered a 1/2 day absence. Arrival after 9:00 a.m. and before 11:00 a.m. is considered tardy.
If a preplanned educational absence is necessary, parents are required to fill out a form for prior approval that can be obtained from the office. The principal should be given at least five school days notice to allow for good communication between the parent, teacher and school office. On this form parents will need to provide the educational itinerary for the trip. All assigned work will be given to your child the day before the trip. All work must be completed and returned to the classroom teacher when the student returns to school.
*The school district policy concerning family trips allows for one major trip (three days or more) or two minor family trips (two days or less) per year.
Any prescription medication that needs to be taken during school hours must be accompanied by both a parent and the physician signature along with specific instructions from the physician. Medication should be taken to the health room upon arrival. Non-prescription medication must be accompanied by a parent signature along with specific instructions. It must be in its original container.
At LeTort we ask that you refrain from bringing pets inside the building. There are many children who are highly allergic to different types of animals and we need to be sensitive to their individual situations.
Conferences are scheduled during the month of November. A schedule for these conferences will be created after we receive input from you concerning convenient times to accommodate your schedule. A letter will go home prior to scheduling for your input. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher at any time during the year as the need arises.
School dress at the elementary level is a matter of good judgment. Loose fitting clothing or footwear which could cause injury is not appropriate for school. We ask that shorts that are worn to school be long enough to reach just above the knee. Tops should cover the midriff area. Sleeveless shirts should have a shoulder width of 4-5 fingers. Clothing that advertises any drugs, alcohol or tobacco products, is of questionable taste, or is potentially disruptive to the educational program will not be permitted. No hats will be permitted to be worn in the building. Please make every effort to mark your child’s belongings with their full name (lunch boxes, jackets, etc.) This will help us to return items that are misplaced.
Respect for the driver and for other students will be expected at all times.
Riding the bus is a privilege, not a right. Students who violate bus rules or
jeopardize the safety of bus riders may forfeit their bus riding privileges.
If damage is done to the bus, it will be paid for by the offender.
If your child will not be riding the bus home on any given day, we must have
a note indicating the change signed by a parent. If we do not have a note, we
are obligated to have your child ride the bus if someone is not here by the
bus dismissal time. A phone call to the office will be sufficient in an emergency.
All students must ride their designated bus. If a change is necessary due to
childcare reasons a babysitting form must be submitted to the school office.
Students are not permitted to eat or drink on the bus. This includes candy and
chewing gum.
Playground equipment for recess should be brought to school in a backpack or
a separate bag.
BUS RULES
1. Take assigned seats and remain seated until your stop. Please keep the aisle
clear.
2. Talk with those sitting close by using a quiet, indoor voice.
3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. (out of aisle and away from windows)
4. Show respect for others.
BUS CONSEQUENCES
If a student is not following the bus rules the driver will speak with the child
reviewing appropriate bus behavior. If the student’s behavior does not
improve the bus driver will communicate the problem to the Principal who will
speak with the student. If the problem persists a written Bus Discipline Referral
will be submitted to the Principal. After meeting with the Principal, a copy
of the referral with disciplinary action will be sent home for a parent signature
and must be returned to the office the following school day. The consequence
for not returning this form will be loss of recess until the form is returned.
Bus transportation is a privilege. If a student chooses to disregard our bus
rules a parent conference will be scheduled to discuss further disciplinary
action. If a student’s behavior poses a threat or danger to others they
will lose this privilege requiring the home to make other transportation arrangements.
*The bus driver is responsible for transporting students safely to and
from school. Behavior concerns will be communicated to the Principal who will
handle all discipline matters. Any questions or concerns should be directed
to the Principal not the bus driver.
Radios, electronic games, tape recorders, etc., are enjoyable for children of all ages. Due to the potential interruption to the learning environment and the danger of them being broken, lost or stolen, these items are NOT to be brought on the bus or to school.
If you plan to drop off your child in the morning please drive around the back
of the school and follow the arrow markers on the macadam. A staff member will
welcome students at these doors between 8:50-9:00 a.m. If your child arrives
after 9 a.m. these doors will be locked so they will need to enter through the
main entrance and register in the office.
STUDENT PICK-UP PROCEDURES
If you plan to pick up your child they MUST have a handwritten note from a parent
or they will be sent home on the bus. This note will be given to the office
and their name will be placed on the “pick-up clipboard”. At 3:25
students being picked up will be dismissed to the doors leading to the back
of the building. Parents should stay in their car and follow the arrow markers
on the macadam. The staff member will dismiss students listed on the clipboard
as their cars are identified. All students who have not been picked up by
3:35 p.m. will be brought to the office to wait for their parent. PLEASE
BE PROMPT when picking up your child.
We encourage parents to schedule dentist appointments, etc. after school hours.
However, we realize this is not always possible. If your child needs to be picked
up early, we ask that parents write a note for the child to give to his/her
teacher. Parents should report to the office and we will call your child’s
classroom teacher to have your child dismissed. If they arrive late, we ask
that you report to the office with the doctor’s excuse and we will send
your child to their classroom after they check in.
