First Grade

Curriculum

Mathematics - We will be using the new Houghton - Mifflin math series. We will be covering basic addition facts with answers through 12, subtraction facts from 12, place value of tens and ones, standard measurement, metric measurement, geometry, introduction to fractions, money (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters), telling time to the half hour, and double digit addition and subtraction.

Science - We will be studying units about rocks, dinosaurs, simple machines, insects and spiders, environmental education, and the ocean.

Social Studies - In first grade we will be studying our community and the people who make it a safe and friendly place to live.

Spelling - We will be using the Curriculum Associates material for first grade spelling. In January we will be adding a few (no more than 8) frequently used words to the core words on the Curriculum Associates list to have spelling lists for the children to study. It is our intention to make them responsible for spelling these words correctly in their writing.

Writing - We use journal writing and a writing workshop format to give the students the opportunity to practice writing.

Health - We will be working with the Here's Looking at You 2000 unit. We also cover dental health, nutrition, and personal safety.
