Language Arts

The first grade language arts curriculum
integrates reading,writing and speaking.
We begin the year reviewing letters and
sounds of the alphabet, relating letters and
sounds to independent phonetic spelling
(writing words as they sound), building a
sight word vocabulary of words that are
frequently used in all language experiences
and sharing and communicating with
students and staff members.

As we continue through the year, many
reading strategies are introduced to decode
new words and improve fluency and
comprehension. Phonetic spelling continues
to be encouraged as new skills are
introduced. Grammar and mechanical
concepts are incorporated in a variety of
writing activities. Neat handwriting and
correct letter formation are stressed
throughout the year.

Mary Pope Osborne (Magic Tree House Series)

Mary Pope Osborne is the author of the Magic Tree House Series chapter books that the first grade teachers read aloud to their classes. We're sure you will begin to see these books appear in your house on library days. They are a favorite among first graders!
