Reading Tips

for Parents

Choosing a
Just Right Reading Book

On the easy side...

  • You run through the book.
  • Can read it fast.
  • You don't stumble over any words.

Just Right...

  • You read this book a little slower, but not too slow.
  • You find the story to be exciting.
  • You stop and look at some words but you can figure most of them out.

On the hard side...

  • There are a lot of words you don't know.
  • The story does not make sense.
  • You have to reread a lot.
  • You feel frustrated.

Five Finger Rule Test

The child should open the book to the middle of the story and begin reading out loud. Every time they come to word that they don't know they should put one finger up. If all five fingers are up after finishing the page, this book is probably on the hard side.

When reading together...

  • Preview the book ahead of time to find out what it might be about.
  • Make verbal or written predictions throughout the book.
  • Stop and ask yourself questions you would like to have answered.
