Social Studies Fourth graders will enjoy learning more about world geography, map skills, and land forms. One of the fun activities we do is creating a salt dough land form relief map. We will also be studying all about our great state of Pennsylvania! A large classroom bulletin board map will allow students to get to know our state by drawing and labeling PA, its border states, major rivers and cities, mountains, and regions. Students help each other learn more about the Native Americans of Pennsylvania through informational posters and classroom presentations. Early colonial life and famous PA people, such as William Penn and Ben Franklin, will be our final focus for the year. Students also enjoy using a computer program called PA HyperStudio which integrates all of these topics into a multimedia format. |

Science The exciting topics we study are animal and plant adaptations , volcanoes and earthquakes, rocks and minerals, and light and sound. These units include activities such as: sending migrating monarch butterflies to Mexico, starting our own rock collections, viewing a slide show presentation of a Hawaiian volcano, creating color wheels, and visiting Indian Echo Caverns and Zoo America in Hershey for our 4th grade field trip.

Writing Our fourth grade writing program consists of instruction and practice in the four basic types of writing: descriptive, narrative, persuasive, and informational. In order to help prepare students for the fifth grade PSSA Writing Assessment, timed writing prompts are also given throughout the year. Language mechanics and grammar are incorporated through the use of daily edits. Some structured writing projects include: a fantasy story, various poetry activities, descriptive language and dialogue conversation pieces, letters to authors, journals, a dinosaur report, and and student published books. |

Math Math concepts this year will include: place value to one million, creating and interpreting different types of graphs, addition and subtraction of larger numbers, basic multiplication and division, fractions, and geometry. Some of the new concepts introduced to fourth graders this year will be long division, decimals, and multiplication of greater numbers. In teaching these concepts we use as many manipulatives, mnemonic devices, games, and literature connections as possible. At this level, students must be able to have quick recall of all their basic facts in order to be successful with these math skills. |
