Early Life

Hiram Ulysses Grant was born on April 27, 1822, the first child of Hannah and Jesse Root Grant. He was born in his parent's home. It was a two room cabin at Point Pleasant, Ohio. Jesse Grant was a tanner by trade. His family was of Scottish decent.

In 1823, when he was one year old, his family moved to Georgetown, Ohio. Grant had two brothers and three sisters.

Everyone called him 'Lyss.

As a young boy he loved horses. He could ride at a very young age. He could handle a whole team of horses by the time he was seven or eight.
