Peer Tutoring Program

Sixth grade students are invited to apply to be Peer Tutors throughout the school year. The tutoring program gives students an extra opportunity to practice their reading, math, writing and spelling skills while working with a sixth grade student. Peer tutoring has also been shown to benefit both the student who receives the tutoring as well as the student doing the tutoring. In the past, tutors and tutees have made significant academic gains as a result of the tutoring experience. Furthermore, student's self-esteem and social skills may also benefit. These tutoring sessions will take place one to five times a week, from 3:00-3:15 and will be supervised by an adult. The goal of these tutoring sessions is to help your child become a more skilled and confident student.

Before the tutoring starts, the school counselor will train your child to use a simple set of strategies at each tutoring session. Tutoring strategies will include: Picking/dropping off tutees from their classrooms, handling tutee misbehavior, reinforcing appropriate tutee behavior, using paired reading, choral reading and repeated readings correctly and with confidence and the cover/copy/compare in spelling.

Tutors are responsible for maintaining their grades and for making arrangements with their classroom teacher regarding work missed while tutoring. Tutors are also asked not to discuss what they are doing during tutoring with other people, if they do not have a legitimate interest in it.
