In second grade, writing concepts directly relate
to phonics, spelling, and reading. Writing workshop is a structured
writing time that reinforces all language arts skills. One of the
ways students practice writing and build on writing skills is through
the use of the "oreo cookie." The "oreo cookie" is a structured way
to organize a story with a solid beginning, middle, and ending. The
five steps involved in writing a good story include:
*prewriting: This is a graphic
organizer in the shape of a hand that contains five fingers for
students to write five main ideas/sentences to be included in the
story.
*drafting: Students use the oreo
cookie sheet and write a main idea from the prewrite hand. The main
idea is then supported with two or more additional sentences. This
continues for each main idea on the prewrite hand.
*editing: Students use a color
coded sheet to identify and check for capitals, punctuation,
etc.
*publishing: A final copy of the story is printed. All words are spelled correctly in the final copy. Illustrations also accompany the story.
.
*revising: This step involves
asking good questions to make the story better.
