2013 Elementary Math Bowl Results

May is the time for the annual Elementary Math Bowl. On May 3 at Letort Elementary, Central Manor’s 4th grade Math Bowl team of Preston Meadors, Jordan Schucker, Andrew Glenn and Reed Lawrence came out on top. On May 9 at Hambright Elementary, Central Manor’s 5th grade team of Ryan Dang, Jackson Wagner, Anna Aston and Brennan McFall took top honors. On May 17 at Martic Elementary, Pequea’s 6th grade Math Bowl team of Erica Shaub, Stephen Albright, Sean Moore and Chris Keller (pictured with Pequea’s principal Mrs. Murray) earned the first place trophy for 6th grade. All seven elementary schools field teams for the Math Bowl which includes three rounds of competition - a team round, individual round, and lightning round. Congratulations to all the mathletes who competed!

Hambright Groundbreaking Kicks Off Construction of New Building

The official groundbreaking for the new Hambright Elementary School along Charlestown Road was held on Thursday, May 2. All students and staff from the current Hambright Elementary were bussed to the site to witness the groundbreaking of Penn Manor School District’s first new elementary school in over fifty years. Pictured left to right – Hambright Elementary principal, Dr. Jerry Egan; Penn Manor School District superintendent, Dr. Mike Leichliter; Penn Manor School Board president, Mr. J. Kenneth Long; current Hambright students, Conner Schlegel (4th grade) and Solymar Soders (6th grade) helped to kick off construction of the new school. Residents will see work begin on the site in the next week or two.

Summer Break Registration – May 1 to May 15

Summer Break registration for students currently in grades 1 to 6 will be accepted from May 1 until May 15. Summer Break is a summer program that runs June 10 to June 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. at Central Manor School (new location this year.) This program is open to all students regardless of school or school district. Students can take up to four courses. The cost for four courses is $75.00. If fewer than 4 courses are chosen, the cost is $25.00 per course. Materials fee may apply. Registration packets are available online at http://www.pennmanor.net/district/summerbreakregistration/. Registration is on a first come/first serve basis.

Spring Fling – Friday, May 17, 2013

Spring Fling, the annual community carnival, will be held at Comet Field on Friday, May 17 from 3 pm to 9:00 pm. This event is planned by Penn Manor High School students for the enjoyment of the entire Penn Manor community. Everyone is invited! High school bands and soloists will be taking to the stage to provide live entertainment from 4 pm to 9 pm. High school sports teams and extra-curricular groups will have booths with carnival games and lots of different types of food. Amusement rides and inflatables will also be featured. New this year – a hot dog and a watermelon eating contest, a car smash and a make-your-own sundae bar! Fireworks will close the event and will begin at 9:00 pm. There is no charge to attend this event and the parking is free. The event will be held rain or shine.

SCORE Lancaster Presents Award to Open Campus PA

At the SCORE Lancaster Open House held on Thursday, April 25, Dr. Mike Leichliter, Penn Manor Superintendent, Dr. Brenda Becker, Hempfield Superintendent, and Dr. Gene Freeman, Manheim Township Superintendent were awarded the Lancaster SCORE Business Development Award for the Open Campus PA initiative. SCORE Lancaster has been collaborating with Open Campus PA since its inception. Retired businessman, Thomas Burgum, serves as the mentor on this project. Mr. Burgum is the Vice President of Member Services for SCORE Lancaster.

PM Comet Trot – Saturday, April 20

The Penn Manor Comet Trot, a leisurely walk/jog and wellness experience for all ages, will be held on Saturday, April 20 from noon to 2:00 pm at the Penn Manor High School track. Events planned include a Track Challenge for students age 9-14 to try to qualify for the Hershey Games. Students must have a copy of their birth certificate and a registration form (available at all elementary schools). Races and field events will start promptly at noon so plan to arrive early. First place winners in each event advance to the district meet. There will be a FitKidz Challenge Course, trail mix and a chance to meet Crunch the Apple and CometMan! A participation trophy will be given to the school with the highest percentage of participation so be sure to register.

There is no cost but donations of cleaning supplies for the Penn Manor Cares Fund are welcome. Come out and enjoy a chance to get healthy and have some fun! The event will be held rain or shine.

Southern Regional Police Officer Reads to Kindergarten Class

Corporal John Michener of the Southern Regional Police Department took time to stop by Pequea Elementary recently to read to Mrs. Drexel’s kindergarten class. The students listened to the humorous story of Officer Buckle & Gloria by Peggy Rathmann and asked Corporal Michener questions about his job. The Southern Regional police officers have been visiting Pequea, as well as Conestoga Elementary School, frequently this year reading to students, visiting classrooms and joining the students for lunch. The school visits help students to build connections with the police officers.

PMHS Student, Bailey Riffert, Receives Craftsman of the Future Award

Penn Manor High School senior, Bailey Riffert, received the 2013 Craftsman of the Future Award presented at the MABX Celebration of Excellence Annual Awards Night held on March 21, 2013. The Craftsman of the Future Award is presented to five Pennsylvania high school seniors who have excelled in construction-related courses. Bailey attends the Brownstown Campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center.
