Secretary Rivera visits PM students, staff

Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera visited Pequea Elementary School Thursday to honor a couple of outstanding staff members and sit in on a sixth-grade class.

Rivera congratulated bus driver Tracy Musser for starting a program that loans books to students to read every day on the bus or at home for pleasure.

Musser, whose bus run includes Central Manor Elementary and the high school, started the program on her own to encourage reluctant readers to try out books for pleasure. Her goal is to get kids hooked on reading. Learn more about the “books on the bus” program here.

Rivera also sat in on the sixth-grade classroom of Elizabeth Raff, who uses a theatrical and movement-based teaching style to create highly engaging lessons. Raff encourages students to stand on their chairs to answer questions or diagram a story by drawing on their desks.

Movement, interaction and creativity are part of every day in Raff’s classes. Learn more about her innovative teaching style here.

Rivera watched a lesson that included a rap song, met every student in the class and conducted a Q&A from the elevated platform that serves as Raff’s classroom “stage.” He, and the students, seemed to enjoy the interaction.

Thank you, Secretary Rivera, for taking the time to find out about the good things happening at our schools!
