How to stay notified of closings/delays

Because of the large number of weather-related school closings and delays this year, some parents have asked for clarification on the best ways to stay informed of school schedule changes. Relying on an automated phone call, text message or email about a school closing/delay is not the most reliable method. Instead, we urge parents to take the following steps to stay informed:

* Check local media outlets first: The WGAL-TV website contains a school closings/delays link: http://www.wgal.com/weather/closings . Parents may sign up to have closing information sent directly to their email address or cell phone through WGAL’s notification system.

School closing/delay information also can be found on local radio stations and at other online media outlets, including LancasterOnline, http://lancasteronline.com/

*Check the Penn Manor website: School closing/delay information is immediately posted to a red banner along the top of the site, http://www.pennmanor.net/

*Check the Penn Manor Twitter feeds:  https://twitter.com/pennmanor (@pennmanor) and https://twitter.com/mleichliter (@mleichliter) . School closing/delay information is immediately posted on these feeds.

*Call the district’s emergency hotline: 872-9500, ext. 2333.

The decision to close or delay school is generally made by 5:15 a.m. and sometimes the night before. If a two-hour delay is in place and the district decides to close school, that decision is made by 7 a.m. The information is shared within minutes via the resources listed above.

Final note: Technology can be unreliable in emergency situations. Consider checking two information sources before your child leaves for school.
