On Saturday, May 7 at Franklin & Marshall College, 59 girls in grades 3 to 6 from Eshleman, Conestoga, Hambright and Central Manor elementary schools participated in the Girls on the Run event. Accompanied by 21 teacher coaches, the girls completed a 5K run. The students have been training after school for the past ten weeks to prepare for this race.
Girls on the Run of Lancaster is a non-profit organization whose mission is to use the power of running to educate and prepare girls in 3rd through 8th grades for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Girls on the Run combines training for a 5K (3.1 miles) running event with a whole person approach: physical, emotional, mental and social. The programs instill self-esteem through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships and physical training–all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff and the community.
